"Access Control: A Smartcard reader is integrated into the base module. A programmable smart-card can be used to customize the Pirelli gateway for each individual user. The Smartcard can store basic information such as passwords and user preferences. This eliminates customer support calls from customers who forget their passwords. Parents can disable their broadband access by removing the Smartcard or can have cards with special profiles created for their children. This gives parents a valuable tool with which to protect children from undesirable Internet sites.
The Smartcard can be used in lieu of a CD to automate installations, which can be bothersome for some customers. It can even allow Broadband installations for applications in which no PC is present.
The Smartcard reader can also be used to control the types of services that are available to each customer. The service provider can also limit the number or type of attached devices, which aids in retaining control of the network. Installation is simplified for paying customers, while would-be pirates face a formidable challenge."
